3/16/08 - Round 2
Koontz Adventures HS @ Mountain Top

Williamson Takes it!

Masontown, WV - Coming into round 2 of the Koontz Adventures East Coast Off-Road Mega Series, the temps were back down and the threat of snow was looming. Masontown, WV was the town and Mountain Top Raceway was the place. Although it did not slow, it was still cold and wet! Round one winner Corey Arbogast was poised to see if he could take another win. Meanwhile, many other top A riders came to race. Some local and some not. With some of the racers returing from their trips down south to race, Sunday was a cold slap in the face, welcome back to WV! The field of 66 riders battled for two hours on the cold, muddy track.  14 riders did not finish.

From the drop of the flag, three Open A riders established themselves as the leaders. Florida’s Justin Williamson, Fairmont, West Virginia’s Ryan Echols and last but not least, West Virginia rider Carl Pettit. The three battled early on. “We were just cruising, having a good time,” Williamson said in the post race interview with Roy Dains. The brisk cold day made the riders conserve their energy and ride smart. Avoiding water was a major concern. Coming into the barrels for the first lap, the three were only six seconds apart, with Echols leading the way. Shortly behind them was Corey Arbogast. Arbogast was coming off the opening round win but could not put a win together this day. Corey settled for 6th Overall and 5th Open A.  The top three racers set a blistering pace on the second lap. After getting affiliated with the track, the leaders set a 50 second quicker lap time than the first. The wet and muddy track provided some technical terrain for the riders. Williamson commented on his view of the track. “The track was good. It was really slippery and technical. I kind of enjoyed it. I had a few little spills but overall, the day was really good.” Ryan Echols lead early on in the race, but eventually was passed by Williamson and could not gain the lead again.
