4/6/08 - Round 4
Koontz Promotions HS @ Deep Creek
Ryan Echols last to start, first to finish!
Round 4 of the Koontz Promotions East Coast Off Road Mega Series saw cold weather and some rain. The mountains of Maryland saw the series make a stop at Mountain Top Go-Cart Raceway near Deep Creek Lake for a day of fun in the mud. With the wind blowing and sky looking like rain, it was a great day for a Hare Scramble.
Heading into round 4, Corey Arbogast is clinging to a ten point overall lead with Red Bull KTM’s Justin Williamson nipping at his heels. Zach Nolan is quietly in 3rd. The Open A (Pro) class is also Arbogast then Williamson 10 back. Andrew Suter is holding to a 10 point lead in the Open B class ahead of Scott Marling and Cody Hill.
From the start, Red Bull KTM’s Justin Williamson snatched the holeshot and Dirt Works KTM’s Corey Arbogast was right on his tail. Early on, it was a battle between Williamson and Arbogast. The two jumped ahead of the pack. 2006 series champ Ryan Echols was dead last off the start. The Steel City Honda pilot had trouble firing the bike, but did not let it get to his head. “Today I didn’t do too bad. Right at the beginning, it would not start. I tried to just not worry about it, just have fun and push.” This left Williamson and Arbogast well ahead of the field of 65 riders. The two were right on each other, but Williamson was gaining enough to keep the lead. Arbogast talks about trying to catch him. “I was gaining just a little bit. I could tell when we were going around turns. I wasn’t gaining a lot, maybe a second or two.” By the end of the first lap, Arbogast had done enough following and went for the pass. “I wanted it bad. About and a half mile before I got to the check point I got him. After that I just kept pushing.”
