4/6/08 - Round 4
Koontz Promotions HS @ Deep Creek
Sturdivant battles back to win!
Round 4 of the Koontz Promotions East Coast Off Road Mega Series saw cold weather and some rain. The mountains of Maryland saw the series make a stop at Mountain Top Go-Cart Raceway near Deep Creek Lake for a day of fun in the mud. With the wind blowing and sky looking like rain, it was a great day for a Hare Scramble.
Coming into round 4, Eric Hoyland has a dominant overall lead with 85 points. Behind him comes Isaiah Hanna and Donnie Henderson tied with 49. Gabe Phillips is behind the pair with 46.
With series point leader Eric Hoyland absent, the overall win was up for grabs. Gabe Phillips, Can-Am pilot Brent Sturdivant, David Whitacre and Jack Tharp and a host of 33 others were ready to race. Even with a few sections cut out from the course, riders battled muddy and wet conditions all race. With temperatures in the 40’s, riders were tested to the max. West Virginia riders Phillips and Sturdivant pulled away from the pack early and battled in the mud. Sturdivant talks about the early part of the race and the track. “The first lap we were just taking our time. Gabe and I were just trying to make our passes. It was a really tight track. We were just trying to look where to go. I looked back a couple times and knew we were breaking away, we were just cruising.” The pair pulled away farther from the field and it seemed a battle for the overall was looming between the two.
