Overall Winner
Gabe Phillips

Masontown, WV - After the Big Bike race, the sun was out and the temperature was rising. 25 quads came out to test themselves and their machines on the mountain top. Dave Muchisko, Kyle Helmick and Gabe Phillips showed up to battle for the overall win. In the last round, the Tucker County Terrain was rough on the top riders and many of them recorded DNF’s. On Saturday, the rocky Preston County terrain also claimed some riders. The course had been beaten in all day by the bikes. Now it was time to see how the quads could handle the Paul Koontz Motor Sports track.

With the drop of the flag the guys were off. Kyle Helmick was in the lead after one lap with Gabe Phillips was quick to follow. The good news for Phillips was that Helmick would retire after the second lap. Also, other good news was Open A rider Dave Muchisko was done after one lap. That only left one Open rider to beat. That rider was Thomas Koontz. Koontz is from up north in the AMA D6 area. He could not find a race in his ome area, so he traveled to D5 country.

Mountain Top Raceway provided another rocky track and eventual Overall/Open A winner Phillips could only describe it in one word “Terrible.” The story of the day was the great ride put together by Thomas Koontz. In the post race interview with AMA D5 rider rep Roy Dains, Koontz talked about the day. “I am from up in D6 and couldn’t find any races, so I am here. I was just riding as hard as I could. I knew he was up there.” Koontz charged hard and on the last lap and he went in for the pass on Phillips. With nothing to lose the PA rider went for a gamble but it did not pay off. The attempted pass resulted in a wreck and Phillips got the win. Koontz recalled the last lap crash. “I went for the pass coming up on the big downhill and I hit that kicker and flipped hard.” Koontz still impressed everyone with the come out of nowhere ride that almost resulted in the overall win.

Yamaha rider Joseph Baker picked up the Vet B win. He also beat out the Vet A riders and took third overall. Allen Teter took the Vet A win. With Kevin Helmick bending a ti rod on lap three and logging in a DNF, the door was open in the Vet C class and WV Suzuki rider Nick Lambruno took the win. Richie Nolan and Ryan Church had a great battle all day long that eventually came down to the last lap. Nolan made a pass took the Open C class win with Church coming in second.
